In Remembrance of our SDGI Founder and President (1974-75), David M. Roseman, M.D., F.A.C.P. (July 1926 - February 2020)

Dr. David Roseman had a distinguished career in medicine that spanned over sixty years. He practiced gastroenterology and internal medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, from 1970 until 2014. In addition to maintaining his private practice, he held multiple leadership positions on the campus including Chairman of the G.I. Section from 1983 and Chairman of the Department of Medicine (1996-2000) and Chief of Staff (2000-2002). In 2014 he was instrumental in establishing the Ronny Schwartz Center for Voice, Swallowing and Motility Disorders at Scripps, the first center of its kind. He chaired numerous committees, organized clinical conferences, and had strong ties with the San Diego medical community. Dedicating his life toward the treatment of patients who suffered from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Dr. Roseman continued to help patients and consult on difficult cases well after his retirement, at age 86, in 2014.

David Mayer Roseman was born and raised in Philadelphia and started college at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore at age 16, skipping the last year of high school. He was accepted at John Hopkins School of Medicine at age 18, having completed an accelerated program and graduating Phi Beta Kappa. However, he was drafted into the U.S. Army instead as World War II was still in progress. He spent two years in advanced infantry training but as the European war had ended, was not needed overseas. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 1951 and interned on the Osler Medical Service.

In 1952 he began his five-year residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center specializing in internal medicine and gastroenterology and doing clinical research. He served as Chief Resident in Medicine for two years and was deeply involved in running the medical service including arranging conference and teaching programs for medical students. Dr. Roseman subsequently established a busy medical practice in New York City in internal medicine with a special interest in gastroenterology. In 1963 he married artist Anne Varick Lauder with whom he had two children (entrepreneur and surfer, Jonathan "Jon" David Roseman and art historian, Anne Varick "Vara" Lauder, PhD).

In 1970 the Roseman family moved to La Jolla where Dr. Roseman held the position of Chief of Gastroenterology at both Scripps Memorial Hospital and the VA Hospital and continued private practice, partnering with Dr. Donald J. Ritt and focusing on gastroenterology. He was a founder of the La Jolla Endoscopy Center in the Ximed Building. He also became Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSD and ran teaching programs for medical students, residents and fellows.

Dr. Roseman was one of the first in southern California to introduce gastroscopy, colonoscopy and other endoscopy techniques. These facilitated ulcer detection and management, colon polyp removal and early detection of colon cancer. Dr. Roseman lectured widely on these subjects and wrote numerous articles in the medical literature as well as several chapters in gastroenterology textbooks.

Dr. Roseman had a special interest in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease. Dr. Burrill Crohn, known as "BB" Crohn, among a team of three research scientists who discovered the disease, was his maternal uncle. From an early age, the two would often discuss medicine as family gatherings.

Dr. Roseman was instrumental in establishing in 1976 the San Diego chapter of the National Foundation for Ileitis & Colitis. In 1979 he helped set-up with Rolf Benirschke (former placekicker for the San Diego Chargers), the San Diego/Imperial County Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (now CCF) where he was Chief Medical Officer (1979-86) and President of the Board. Dr. Roseman also served on the Foundation's National Board of Directors for eight years (1980-88). The local CCF chapter awarded him with many honors: the Premiere Physician Award (1991), the Physician of the Year Award (1995) and two lifetime achievement awards: The Lifetime Achievement in Medicine Award (1999) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2016).

Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla presented him with the Friend of Medicine Award (2001), the Scripps Memorial Hospital Friend of Nursing Award (2001). He twice received Scripps' prestigious Physician of the Year Award (2002 and 2005).

Dr. Roseman was the Founder of the San Diego Gastroenterology Society and its first President (1974-75). He also launched a major conference on inflammatory bowel disease ("New Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Disease"), now a nationwide event.

Although as a physician Dr. Roseman spent countless hours at the hospital and was often called out numerous times during the middle of the night when his patients were in need, he still managed a full family life and was an outdoor enthusiast. His hobbies included sailing, a lifelong passion, as well as ocean swimming, bodysurfing, skiing, running half marathons and after his retirement in 2014, bridge and extensive reading. In 1986 he married Sherry Lindquist Curry. He enjoyed having his children and his extended family residing nearby.
